Products come in all shapes and sizes. When most people think of white background product photography, they tend to think about small products that you’d photograph on a table top.
A relatively small set up, using small pieces of cards as reflectors. But what if the products are much bigger? We’ve done a a number of product photography shoots for Pentre Group, one of the world’s largest producers of cable reels, drums and ancillary cable handling products.
The products range from tiny 50mm plastic reels to massive 3 metre diameter cable drums. They also make even bigger ones to special order at a different location but we haven’t photographed those yet.
All the products come in groups or categories which are marketed to different industries such as electrical, telecoms, etc. This meant that most of the products were photographed in groups as you can see from the photos in this post. It was easier to set up our lights and camera in Pentre’s showroom than try and bring all the products to a studio, so that’s what we did. Using one of the rooms in their showroom area, we set up a white backdrop and a Bowens 400 watt strobe with a 6’x4′ soft box above and in front of the products and the camera sat underneath on its tripod and was tethered to a lap top so that the photographs could be edited and approved as we took them. This shortened the approval process and allowed us to apply standard editing tweaks to each shot as it was taken.
Some of the very largest products needed specialist lifting equipment so we set up a second white background in the warehouse to photograph these separately but using the same lighting and shooting set ups.
After the shoot was finished and the initial proof photos had been approved, the photos were handed to our retouching team to remove blemishes, scratches and marks on the products which couldn’t be removed when the products were cleaned. They also removed the white backgrounds so that any background colour could be applied when the photos were being used on the website, in brochures, mailers and adverts. The photos are also shared with distributors around the world. Because the backgrounds have been removed, several product groups can be combined into one image where required.
